Common questions

What is an exercise physiologist?

An Exercise Physiologist (EP) is a health professional who has completed a four year university degree. EPs use exercise to help with the treatment and management of a range of conditions such as cancer, neurological, cardiac, metabolic, chronic pain, and mental health concerns. Our speciality lies in having a comprehensive understanding of the bodies physiology and how to prescribe exercise to help manage long term conditions.

What if I don’t like going to the gym?

That’s okay! There are so many other ways to exercise and move your body in a way that’s beneficial for you. I am more than happy to design a program that works for you to complete at home or in another environment. A gym is not a necessity to a healthy lifestyle.

I’m worried I’m not healthy enough to start?

I understand the idea of exercise can seem daunting when your body isn’t functioning at its best – but exercise can be tailored to any ability or health level. Exercise can range from doing some small movements in bed, learning to walk again, or running a marathon. Tailored appropriately, exercise can be safe and beneficial for almost anyone.

As health professionals we screen to ensure exercise is safe for you and will always refer to your doctor should any concerns arise.

I feel anxious about starting, can you talk me through the first session?

When you first arrive at the clinic, there is either some small steps or a ramp for you to access the front door. Once you come in there will be a small reception area with some benches for you to sit on. You’re welcome to have a seat once you arrive until either myself or one of the friendly coaches at inertia come to say hello. The gym has two sections, the main gym which you will see when you come in behind reception, and a quieter clinical gym section behind the wooden doors. When your appointment time comes, I will come and get you so we can complete our session.

Can I park at the clinic?

There are around 6 car parks right at the front of the clinic. There is also on street parking offered close by. If there is ever a situation where you need a close park and cannot get one, please give us a call and we can sort something out.

What to bring with me to a session?

Please wear closed in shoes and something that is comfortable to move around in. A water bottle will also come in handy. If you have a doctors referral (which hasn’t already been forwarded to us) please bring that in too.

I am still going through cancer treatment, should I wait until it’s finished until I see you?

Research shows how beneficial exercise can be for individuals undergoing cancer treatment. It has been shown to lessen functional decline, minimise side effects, and improve quality of life. The exercises recommended during treatment phases will often look quite different to regular exercise and need to be prescribed accordingly.

Although, it’s important to acknowledge that going through treatment can often be an overwhelming, burdensome time. Listen to your body and what feels best for you.
