Exercise Physiologists use exercise to help with the treatment and management of a range of chronic conditions. Our speciality lies in having a comprehensive understanding of the bodies physiology and how to prescribe exercise to help manage long term conditions.
The conditions I am experienced working with include:
Cancer
- For support during or recovery after chemotherapy and endocrine therapy to improve strength, endurance, and overall function.
- To return range of motion and function following radiotherapy or surgery.
- To optimise immune function and reduce the risk of cancer recurrence.
Neurological conditions
- Functional strength, gait training, balance, coordination, and aerobic training for the management of:
- Parkinson-plus conditions (Parkinsons, Lewy-body dementia, and Progressive Supranuclear Palsy).
- Stroke
- Brain tumours or injuries (ABI and TBI)
- Multiple Sclerosis
Spinal cord injuries
- Functional strength, power, and aerobic training for complete spinal cord injuries.
- Functional strength, gait training, balance, coordination, and aerobic training for incomplete spinal cord injuries.
Amputations
- Highly individualised training based on amputation location, function, and goals.
Arthritis
- Functional strength, stability, and pain management programming which initially focuses on specialised low load movements for the management of osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and ankylosing spondylitis.
Cardiac and metabolic conditions
- Modified and progressive aerobic and functional strength training for the management of diabetes, cardiovascular disease and heart arrhythmias.
Psychosocial and mental health
- Highly individualised training based on function and goals with a focus on enjoyment, motivation, and building independence.
Chronic pain
- Individualised and progressive functional strength, stability, and pain management programming based on movement and dysfunction testing.
